What size sauna heater do I need?

A heater that is too small never gets the room hot enough; one that is too big heats too fast and dries the air. Here is how to size an electric sauna heater in four steps.

1. Measure the room volume

Multiply length × width × height of the hot room in metres. A 2 × 2 m sauna with a 2.1 m ceiling is 8.4 m³.

2. Add extra for cold surfaces

Glass, tile, stone and concrete absorb heat. As a common rule, add about 1.2 m³ to your volume for every square metre of uninsulated glass or masonry wall. A glass-front cabin often needs one size up.

3. Match the volume to the heater

Each heater has a recommended room volume on its data sheet. Pick a heater whose range covers your adjusted volume, ideally not at the very top of the range.

4. Check your power supply

Smaller heaters can run on single-phase 230 V; larger ones need three-phase 400 V. Ask your electrician before you order.
